APARTMENT

LIVING, HILVERSUM

Custom loft in former post office
The owner of this loft in Hilversum called in Graziosi Progetti for the interior design: “In 2020 I bought this apartment in the former post office of Hilversum, built around 1940. A number of apartments were realised here with a shell delivery. I have known Nina since 2007, she also made something beautiful out of my previous house.” The hull condition of the apartment offered opportunities to create something special, says Nina Graziosi: “When I first went to look, there was really nothing. But the high windows and the entresol made the space very special in terms of experience.”

Although there was already a floor plan for the apartment, Graziosi Progetti adapted it completely to the wishes of the client: “Nina just took pen and paper and started sketching. Then a 3D was made, which was really fantastic. And the end result actually turned out exactly like the design.”

Void
Originally there would be two bedrooms and a bathroom in the apartment, but the client wanted a second bathroom for guests. The closed wall on the mezzanine was also scrapped. “I wanted to be able to look down from my bedroom on the entresol, so instead of a fixed wall there are now sliding doors that I can close at night.” By removing the wall from the entresol, the height-width ratio is also better, explains Graziosi: “Otherwise, the void would be too high in relation to the size of the space.”

Because a lot of daylight enters the living area thanks to the loft and the high windows, a relatively dark oak floor could be used here. For the loose furniture, Morena Egger, owner of home furnishing store Contempera, advised.

Instead of the standard wooden stairs to the mezzanine, a beautiful steel staircase has been chosen. Graziosi: “To give more context to this, we placed a steel beam in the back wall of the room.” The first floor has a light natural stone floor, which continues from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Good cooperation
The layout in the kitchen was also overhauled. The client wanted a cooking island, Nina has realised this by turning the original setup. The kitchen was a tricky space, says Graziosi: “We had to solve a few architectural issues; the windows were very high and a concrete cuckoo protruded from the wall. We eliminated that by integrating it into a cupboard. The kitchen ends in a point at the rear, here we have made a sitting area where you can eat. We also finished the ceiling differently, which was meant to be closed. We left it open, which not only gives you more height, but also a different atmosphere.”

The client is very happy with her house and satisfied with the good cooperation with Graziosi Progetti. “I didn’t want a standard apartment, and Nina really turned it into something special. I feel very good here.”

Graziosi: “It is important to listen carefully to the client’s wishes and to see what opportunities there are for opportunities. Then you get to work with that. We have really created a fantastic loft feeling here on relatively few square meters.”
