Apartment
THE HAGUE
The listed building and the beautiful location, made the owner of this apartment decide that the interior should be ‘first class’. So he called in the interior design and architecture firm Graziosi Progetti from The Hague. A team that looks, empathizes and amazingly transforms. “Each design is a cocktail of three aspects,” explains founder Nina Graziosi. “The client’s wishes, the location and the architecture. The latter is often a source of inspiration for creative solutions. We bring these three aspects together into one experience.”
ENTRANCE | SURPRISING AMBIANCE
The apartment is located in the former headquarters of a leading Dutch company. “As is often the case with transformations of former business premises, the installations are concealed in the ceiling, so sometimes you have to deal with significant differences in height,” Nina explains. An effect that is often not nice to look at, but has been beautifully resolved here. “When we first entered the apartment, our feeling right away was that the proportions weren’t right. My co-architect Felicia and I applied an aesthetic correction, making the low section appear higher and optically lowering the vertical section between the low and high ceiling. This created a cove that draws the two ceilings together. We created a kind of two worlds, with the cove giving a luxurious look.”
The entrance is the focal point and provides access to the living room, master bedroom and an office adjoining to the guest room. You can feel the luxurious effect immediately. The two sliding doors to the living room disappear into a TV and fireplace wall that separates the living room from the hallway. The rear wall is a large mirrored section, creating a spacious feel to the hallway. A glance to the right gives a nice vista towards the bedroom. Full use has been made of long sightlines, colors and mirrors to give the compact apartment a spacious feeling.
LIVING ROOM & KITCHEN | HIGH-CLASS AND LIVABLE
Once inside, the intimate living room wraps you in like a tailored suit. This is also exactly how the client experiences his home. Here you clearly experience how one ceiling embraces the other, with the fireplace element breaking the horizontal line. Italian furniture was chosen, with subdued, soft colors. “The living room is a pleasant size and feels like an intimate, protected environment,” he says. Since the sliding walls give a permanent view through to the left and right, the hall is visually a part of the living room. “There are also mirrors behind the sofa that break up the somewhat higher parapet,” Felicia Hompus says. The living room flows into a dining room, around the corner to the left is the kitchen. “Now we come to the pronounced part,” Nina describes. A bold custom wallpaper by Wall and Deco and a high-gloss table in terracotta color were chosen, accompanied by matching chairs. The client’s Amsterdam standing watch was also given a place here. “The beautiful, classic wood with patina and the high-gloss lacquered table create a very nice field of tension,” says Nina. She continues: “We love ‘accidents’ in an interior, elements that just don’t quite hold their style and break the whole. The clock and table break through the soft, natural tones and give character. It’s a delicate balance of an accident that ends well.”
About the wallpaper, the client says, “I wasn’t so sure about it at first, but it is spot-on and enlarges the space through the play of lines. I also had doubts about the lamps and chairs, but I’m glad I didn’t get too stubborn. I really like them, besides, the closed bottom of the chairs gives peace and they are very comfortable.” The kitchen is situated under the suspended ceiling and consists of a sink area with a steam oven, combi-oven and warming drawer, to the right are a coffee machine, wine cooler and refrigerator. A striking feature is the expressive ceramic back wall, which is also to be found in the bathroom.
Furthermore, there is no kitchen cabinet on the left, deliberately chosen this way to create a vertical line. From the cooking island with integrated extractor you look outside, in good weather the doors to the French balcony can be opened. The cooking area flows into a bar table with lovely chairs. “This is a nice place to sit, also an intimate place because of the low ceiling. Built-in closets are incorporated throughout, I have more storage space than I use.”
BEDROOM & BATHROOM | UNDERSTATEDLY IMPRESSIVE
Back in the central hallway, on the line of sight is the master bedroom with adjoining bathroom. A lovely place, rich and understated, masculine yet soft thanks to the natural colors and round shapes. Here too we find a lot of customization, such as the wallpaper and the back wall of the bed. The bathroom is comfortable yet spectacular. The same ceramic finish embraces the shower here. Thanks to clever interventions, the space looks even bigger, such as lighting, a floating vanity and the toilet with shorter seat.
The apartment also contains an office with double fold-out bed, toilet, guest bathroom and a laundry room with built-in washer and dryer at eye level. Everything has been thought of, beautiful details are everywhere and the client really lacks nothing. He himself is extremely satisfied with the result. “Nina, Felicia and the team did an excellent job with the space. It has become a comfortable hotel suite with a kitchen, where upon entering I immediately feel at home. I think the impressive thing is that the team listened carefully to my wishes but more importantly recognized what I did not name. They very cleverly incorporated this into the design. There are elements in this apartment that I could not have thought of myself, but once it was finished I thought: this was the intention.
